Elmiron, also known as pentosan polysulfate sodium, has been shown to be toxic to the retina and causing permanent damage, called Pigmentary Maculopathy. Studies have shown that up to 25% of patients with “significant exposure to Elmiron” have shown signs of eye damage. Through this study, it was found that Belviq increases the user’s chance of contracting cancer. On February 13, 2020, the FDA’s Drug Safety Communication advises patients to stop taking Belviq immediately due to health risks.
